Treatment Length

The number of treatments needed to alleviate a disorder varies depending on the individual and his or her type of illness. Generally, acute conditions can be treated effectively within a few treatments. Chronic conditions, which have developed over years, may lengthen the period of time for positive results. However, progression over the length of treatment will reflect the gradual restoration of the body's strength and vitality.

Procedures

During the initial treatment, expect a longer visit, typically over 1 hour. Your personal condition will be carefully evaluated through questions regarding medical history and observations such as diagnosing your pulse and checking various areas of the body for tenderness. A specific diagnostic conclusion will be made after the evaluation and a combination of one or more of the following techniques will be incorporated into your treatment. Follow up visits will usually range from 45 minutes to one hour.

Techniques

The acupuncture needles, which are five times thinner than typical hypodermic needles, are placed in specific acupuncture points. The insertion technique is almost painless. A tingling sensation or dull ache may occur when the needles are stimulated.

Moxibustion is often used for muscle spasms and acupuncture analgesia. Moxa is a Chinese herb which is rolled into sticks or cones and then burned above the skin. This technique is also used, in general, to enhance point stimulation.

Massage and body work are often applied in cooperation with needling in order to aid relaxation and facilitate the movement of qi.

Follow Up

The most important element to your treatment is relaxation. Allow yourself to take the time to rest and concentrate only on what your body is feeling. After the treatment, try not to involve yourslf in any strenuous activities. Drinking alcohol, coffee or tea will only deter your body from using its natural resources to heal. Drink lots of water between treatments to flush any toxins that may have released into your system.

Response

Each individual responds differently to the acupuncture techniques. Your response may vary from immediate response to delayed progression. In addition to the length of response, changes may be dramatic or slow and subtle. The only way to distinguish your rate of repsonse is through your awareness of change. With pain conditions, look for any dimished effect regarding the intensity. With treatment of functional disorders, such as allergies, the desired effects may progress slower than anticipated.

Occasionally, symptoms of an illness may temporarily increase after treatment starts. This is known as "the healing crisis." The body is rallying its strength, and this is a positive sign to altering its old blocks and patterns.
