Introduction to Acupuncture

Originating in China over 3,000 years ago, it is presently used as a primary health care system throughout the world.

Acupuncture is a method of balancing and building the body's life force energy, known as "qi" (pronounced chee). Acupuncturists recognize particular pathways called "meridians" through which this energy circulates.

Traditional Chinese medicine views disease as the result of an imbalance or blockage in the body's natural energy flow. Such imbalances manifest in physical, emotional, and psychosomatic stress-related disorders.

Acupuncture can be perceived through western perspective as stimulating the circulation of blood, endorphins, and cortisol, otherwise known as the body's natural pain killer. By releasing such a natural pain killer, acupuncture then stimulates the body to heal itself.

Sterile, thin, stainless steel needles are inserted into specific points along the meridians, or pathways, in order to disperse the blockage and mobilize the body's natural immune response. Needling, as this is referred, is one of numerous energy balancing techniques. (See Techniques for more.) Also included in traditional treatment are dietary counseling, various oriental massage techniques, moxibustion (stimulating acupuncture points with heat) techniques, and herbal remedies.
